Wiltshire Police raced to reports of a wrong-way driver on the M4 last night.
At least two emergency calls hit the control room at around 11pm, with the callers reporting a car driving wrong direction between junctions 15 and 16.
National Highways reportedly changed their matrix boards to warn people of the ongoing incident, reducing the speed limit to 20mph.
Police cars were witnessed responding towards the reported incident on the opposite carriageway in a bid to catch up to the driver.
Officers failed in their attempts to find the dangerous driver, with it likely they had U-turned by the time blue lights were seen.
A spokesperson for the force said: “we received a couple of calls last night around 11pm reporting a car allegedly travelling westbound on the eastbound carriageway of the M4 (J15 and 16).
“However, despite officers carrying out patrols along that stretch of motorway, nobody was located.”
