Prison for Swindon man who assaulted and controlled his wife over three years

A Swindon man has been sentenced for assaulting and controlling his wife.

Mohit Wadhwa, aged 37, from Trowbridge Close, Swindon was found guilty of two counts of Actual Bodily Harm along with several counts of coercive and controlling behaviour towards his wife in an earlier trial at Swindon Crown Court.

Today, at the same court, he was sentenced to three years and seven months in prison, plus a restraining order preventing him from contacting his wife and children.

Wadhwa was convicted of carrying out the two assaults at their home address as well as the controlling behaviour between December 2015 and October 2018.

Following today’s sentencing, DC Tanya Jarvis said: “We welcome this result for a case which has taken some time to bring to court due to its complex nature and the Covid restrictions introduced in courts.

“All through the investigation Wadhwa maintained his innocence – blaming his wife, who is no longer in a relationship with him – rather than admitting he was the perpetrator in the physical assaults and coercive, controlling behaviour.

“I want to thank the victim for having the courage to report this to us and to see the case through to the end. I now hope she and her family can try and put this behind them.

“I know the victim will echo these words: if you are in an abusive relationship, help is at hand. Please do not suffer in silence and report it to police or one of our partner agencies – there are many people who can help you.

“Also, if you know someone who is in an abusive relationship, you can also support them by reaching out for help on their behalf.”

You can call the police on 101 or 999 in an emergency or contact Splitz (if you live outside of Swindon) on 01225 775276 or 01793 610610 after 5pm or at weekends; if you live in the borough of Swindon call Swindon Domestic Abuse Support Service on 01793 610610 – this operates 24/7.
