Will Young has been spared a driving ban after committing an offence near his home in Calne – claiming it would cause exceptional hardship.

The 46-year-old pop star was caught using a mobile phone at the wheel of his green Volkswagen Golf on Oxford Road on 28 March this year.

Young owns a Georgian townhouse worth around £1 million in the middle of Calne – less than a mile from the location of the offence.

At Salisbury Magistrates’ Court on 30 September, he made an exceptional hardship argument after pleading guilty to using his phone in his hand while driving.

The bench of magistrates considered his counsel’s submissions, and decided to spare him a disqualification from driving – despite having accrued 12 points.

Court documents state that exceptional hardship was found because it would have “significant impact on your [mental health] issues and there is no alternative for you in your position”.

It adds that secondarily, the ban would have an “impact on the charitable causes you support”.

He was fined £666 and told to pay costs of £90 to Wiltshire Police and a £266 surcharge.

Speaking to Wiltshire 999s about his prosecution on his doorstep this morning (Tuesday), Young said he “thought the whole thing was very positive”.

It’s not the first time the singer has been before the courts for driving matters.

Back in 2018, he crashed his Mercedes into a parked car in a lay-by on the A68 – narrowly avoiding hitting the driver, who managed to leap out of the way.

According to the BBC, Young was fined £600 and handed five points. As a result he was banned from driving for six months due to totting.
