Police are set to move dozens of tributes left at the scene of Sunday’s quadruple fatal collision near Chippenham over safety fears of those visiting the verge.
This morning alone more than 25 mourners were seen stood together paying their respects at the crash site, causing the police to partially close the road and direct traffic.
Working with the Highways Agency, Wiltshire Police has decided it will carefully and respectfully move the tributes to a grass verge further down the road near to The Lysley Arms.
This will be completed by 2pm tomorrow, with those wishing to leave tributes will be permitted to use the pub car park to do so. A walkway is also being cleared through to Old Derry Hill so those visiting the scene will not need to walk along the busy A4.
“We completely understand that many people will wish to leave tributes at the scene and pay their respects following such a devastating incident, but we do not want people standing in the main road to do so”, Police Inspector James Brain said.
“Hopefully this arrangement will ensure those visiting the scene can pay their respects safely.
“We have been keeping the families of those involved updated and they are supportive of this decision.”
