Police target ‘aggressive beggers’ in Melksham with extra patrols

Officers have been conducting high visibility patrols in Melksham today following reports of drug dealing, anti-social behaviour and aggressive begging in recent weeks.

Uniformed officers from Trowbridge and Melksham as well as Tri-Force officers carried out patrols while actively engaging with the public and potential suspects.

Inspector Steve McGrath said: “As a result of intelligence we have received over the past few weeks, officers have been carrying out patrols in certain areas of the town to encourage the community to engage with police and to deter individuals from engaging in criminality in the town.

“We would encourage members of the public to help by acting as our eyes and ears – if you see any anti-social behaviour in the town or any activity that appears suspicious, please let us know so we can solve the issue long term.

“It’s important that people feel a sense of pride in their community and we are determined to stamp out any behaviour which negatively impacts on this.”

Inspector McGrath said officers will continue to engage with local business owners and residents over the coming weeks.

“The local Community Policing Team is aware of the ongoing issue of anti-social behaviour in Melksham town centre and as well as high visibility patrols, they will be working closely with local businesses to obtain statements in relation to any incidents,” he said.

“This will help us build a clearer picture of the problem and how best to tackle it.

“We will be dealing appropriately with anyone we see begging in the town centre, in particular if they are aggressive – some of these people are not homeless and we would advise people not to hand over money but support homeless charities who are there to help and to report any aggressive begging to police. Those who are in need will be sign posted to the relevant charities or agencies.”

To report an incident, call 101. In an emergency, call 999.
