Wiltshire Police is investigating the shooting of wild birds in Melksham.

The force is appealing for information following the discovery of dead birds in the Bowerhill Lane area of the town over the past weeks and months.

The most recent shooting occurred around 4 February – the victim, a pigeon, was found on the ground adjacent to a large tree on the farm side of the road.

In one incident, a sparrowhawk – a bird of prey – was found to have been shot at the location.

In a statement, a police spokesperson said: “Members of the public walking along Bowerhill Lane, Melksham have reported finding wild birds that have been shot.

The most recent was on 4 February when a pigeon was found on the ground adjacent to a large tree on the farm side of the road.

“In past months, a number of pigeons, one Magpie and one Sparrowhawk have been found shot in the same location.

“It is an offence to intentionally kill, injure or take a wild bird.

“If you have witnessed anything or know who may be responsible, please report online or call 101 and quote crime reference number 54220008030.

“Alternatively, call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
