The Night Angels are set to begin patrols in Swindon this January, providing safety support in the town centre during busy night time hours.
The initiative is being backed by the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner for Wiltshire and Swindon (OPCC) and aims to help people get home safely after a night out.
In Swindon, volunteers will patrol in teams of two or more and will carry equipment including first aid supplies, phone chargers, anti-spiking kits, blankets, water and clothing.
The teams – who’ll be sporting wearing pink vests – are trained to support vulnerable people and can transport them to a place of safety when required.
The Night Angels work closely with emergency services and local night time economy venues to provide reassurance and early intervention where concerns are identified.
The group has recently supported Operation Vigilant alongside Wiltshire Police, focusing on safety in busy evening and night time settings.
A OPCC spokesperson said: “The Night Angels are coming to Swindon this January! Because everyone deserves to get home safe.
“Out in teams of 2+, they’re equipped with everything from first aid and to phone chargers, anti-spiking kits, blankets, and more. All to help you stay safe and get home safe.
“They work closely with emergency services and local venues, and can even transport vulnerable people to safety when needed.”
The Night Angels were first launched in Stroud on Friday 22 December 2023, coinciding with the opening of Trio nightclub.
In Stroud, patrols operate in teams of four or more, reflecting the different demands of the town.
All volunteers receive extensive training, enhanced DBS checks and operate in pink uniform as part of the wider Night Angels team.
The organisation was founded by Chrissie Lowery and is supported by a team of lead volunteers.
A related initiative, known as the Train Angels, has also been launched in partnership with Great Western Railway to support passenger safety on rail services.
People interested in becoming a Night Angel can apply directly through the organisation.
