An investigation has been launched after the discovery of a body in Brinkworth.

Emergency services were called to the railway line in the School Hill area at around 8.40am this morning (Wednesday).

It’s believed a train passenger reported seeing a deceased person hanging from a bridge, however, this has not been confirmed by police.

Firefighters from Chippenham and Stratton in Swindon attended the scene and ten police vehicles were said to be parked nearby.

The train line – between Swindon and Bristol Parkway – is expected to remain closed until mid-afternoon.

The British Transport Police confirmed that an investigation is underway following the death.

A spokesperson said: “Officers were called to the Brinkworth area at 8.40am today (17 July) following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

“Paramedics also attended however sadly a person has been pronounced dead at the scene.

“Officers are currently working to establish the full circumstances behind the person’s death.”

Wiltshire Police said officers are “assisting British Transport Police with an incident on the railway bridge in Brinkworth”, adding that “we have closed the road whilst the incident is dealt with”.

A statement on the Great Western Railway website reads: “Due to the emergency services dealing with an incident between Swindon and Bristol Parkway the line is blocked. Disruption is expected until 15:00 17/07.

“Train services between Swindon and Bristol Parkway may be cancelled or diverted.

“We are sorry for the delay to your journey.

“While the Emergency Services respond to an incident we are unable to run trains, in either direction, between Swindon and Bristol Parkway. Where possible we will divert trains by an alternative route, but this may add 30 minutes to your journey.”
