Wiltshire Police has launched an investigation after a cat famous for his patrol of a Swindon supermarket was ‘booted by a shopper’.
The feline, named Bob, spends his days purring at customers while he indulges in strokes and cuddles at The Cooperative Food store in Taw Hill Village Centre on Sunday (24 October).
But he was left cowering in fear when he was allegedly attacked by a man in a fit of rage.
It’s claimed the suspect kicked the animal when he was told to join the back of the queue and the incident was reportedly captured on CCTV.
Bob’s owner, Ian Barrett said he “will be seeking to press charges for criminal damage against the man”, adding that his behaviour is “totally unacceptable”.
Wiltshire Police has confirmed it is investigating the incident and has appealed for witnesses to get in touch.
“We received a report relating to an allegation that a cat was kicked during an incident at the Co-op on Aiken Road, Swindon, on Sunday morning (24 October)”, a spokesperson told Wiltshire 999s.
Adding: “We are carrying out enquiries and would ask any witnesses to call us on 101, quoting crime reference 54210104648.”
Local residents took to social media to express their concern for Bob following the incident.
Jason Lane, who saw the animal’s battering unfold, said: “To the man who first tried to jump the queue in the Co-op at Taw Hill then when told by the shop assistant to get to the back of the queue decided to take his frustration out and kick Bob who was sat doing nothing.
“The next time I see you do that, I will see how you like being kicked.
“[The incident] should be on camera if the RSPCA want to look at the footage.”
Sarah Jones said: “Bob means so much to me. It’s silly but I see him nearly every single day and he always wants to say hello.
“He’s a local celebrity. I think people would be more excited to see Bob outside the Co-op than an actual human celebrity.”
Danii Bates said: “If I would of witnessed this, I would of punched that man in the throat I don’t even care.”
Adding: “Me and my son love Bob, always say hi when I see him and loves a good tickle.”
Elizabeth Pleasant said: “I was in the shop and experienced how rude the man was to the shop assistant which was totally unacceptable.
“I didn’t see him assault Bob so cannot help I’m afraid but poor Bob was visually on edge as I pulled off in my car.”
Beverley Batt said: “Bob is an amazing cat and we all love him so much.”
Meghan Sugrue said: “I’m so sorry this happened to Bob.
“I hope it doesn’t stop him feeling comfortable being out and about.
“We all love Bob and he doesn’t deserve this, sending him so much love and cuddles.”
