A man who ran from police officers across six lanes of high-speed traffic after being stopped on the M4 was detained by Police Dog Fozzy.

At around 12.30pm yesterday, an officer in an unmarked car spotted a vehicle being driven dangerously at speeds in excess of 100mph along the M4 eastbound between junction 17 and 16.

The vehicle was seen to come to a stop before the occupant decamped from the car, jumped over the central reservation and across the carriageway before running into nearby fields.

PC Simon Goodwin and his police dog Fozzy arrived in the area.

Fozzy immediately picked up a scent in the field next to the M4 and continued to follow a track across three fields and over fences before locating and detaining a man in undergrowth near to a stream.

Approximately £4,000 cash was located inside the vehicle. The cash and the car – an Audi A3 – were seized for further enquiries.

A man in his 20s from Aldershot was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, drug driving, concerned in the supply of class A drugs and money laundering. He remains in custody at Gablecross police station for further questioning.

PC Simon Goodwin said: “This was an extremely good job by Fozzy who tracked for quarter of a mile through several fields and over running water to locate a man hiding in bushes – it would have been impossible for an officer to find him quickly without the power of a dog’s nose because he was so well hidden. This is exactly the sort of incident our police dogs are trained for.

“The manner of driving leading up to this incident was extremely dangerous and this man’s actions put other road users lives in danger.”

Anyone who witnessed the incident should call 101 and quote crime reference number 54200009675.
