Police and Crime Commissioners are to be scrapped by the government.
In Wiltshire, the elected post is currently held by Philip Wilkinson – a Conservative.
The retired British Army officer took up the role in 2021, and was re-elected in 2024.
But the public have widely criticised the position as a layer of additional bureaucracy and a waste of taxpayer funds.
Others believe the PCC is independent accountability, and removing it means the Chief Constable won’t be held to account in the same way.
The Labour government is set to announce that Police and Crime Commissioners will be abolished ahead of the 2028 election. It’ll save £100m over this parliament.
The could make away for significant reform to policing by Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood.
Earlier this year, Met boss Sir Mark Rowley called for the axing of county police forces – urging that they be combined into just 12.
He said the huge move could free up more funds, which are limited as is.
