A man has died after being hit by a London Paddington-bound train this afternoon.

The fatal incident happened on Platform 3 at Swindon Train Station at just after 4pm, where the Bristol-London Great Western Railway train was arriving for its 4.10pm stop.

Three fire crews, two fire officers and a large number of police personnel from Wiltshire Police and the British Transport Police attended the incident.

A private ambulance left the scene at just after 5pm and all lines were reopened.

A source told Wiltshire 999s that ‘quite a few’ people on Platforms 3 and 4 witnessed the death, and were ‘supported by staff whilst the station was fully evacuated’.

A South Western Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called at 4.10pm about an incident on Station Road, Swindon. We sent an ambulance crew and a senior paramedic to attend the incident.”
