A pedestrian was killed in a crash on the M4 near Chippenham in the early hours of this morning (Monday).

Emergency services rushed to the scene, near the westbound exit slip-road from Leigh Delamere, at around 1am.

A man, aged in his 40s, was struck by a vehicle – thought to be a Volkswagen Transporter – on the carriageway.

Wiltshire Police said that his family have been informed and is being supported by specialist liaison officers. “Our thoughts are with them at this difficult time”, a spokesperson added.

A damaged Volkswagen Transporter is the only civilian car at the scene
A forensic collision investigation is ongoing this morning

The force also confirmed that the vehicle involved in the impact remained at the scene and said that the driver is assisting police with their investigation into what happened.

The M4, between Junction 17 (Chippenham) and Junction 18 (Bath) remains closed westbound and isn’t likely to reopen until later today. It should be open before the rush hour.

Screens have been erected around part of the crash site

Anyone with information, including dashcam footage, is asked to contact Wiltshire Police by calling 101 and quoting log number 8 of 20 February.
