Part of the A303 has been closed following a fire at a property in a Wiltshire village.
Emergency services were called to a chimney blaze in Winterbourne Stoke at around 7.40am today (Tuesday).
Two fire engines, from Amesbury and Salisbury, attended the scene and found a fire involving the chimney of the home.
Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service crews used buckets of water, a chimney kit and a thermal imaging camera to tackle the blaze.
Due to the property’s location, fire appliances are blocking the A303 – forcing a westbound closure between the A360 (near Salisbury) and the A36 (Deptford).
Wiltshire Police is assisting with the road closure.
A spokesperson for Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “We were called at 7.40am today with reports of a property fire at a property in Winterbourne Stoke.
“Two appliances were mobilised, from Amesbury and Salisbury, and on arrival found a fire involving the chimney.
“Crews are using buckets of water, a chimney kit and thermal imaging camera to locate and extinguish the fire.
“Due to the location of the property, part of the A303 has been blocked by our appliances therefore we are asking the public to find alternative routes due to traffic delays.”
National Highways has issued a diversion for drivers travelling westbound.
Motorists should follow signs marked with a ‘hollow triangle’ symbol:
- Exit the A303 westbound at Longbarrow Roundabout
- Take the third exit onto the A360
- At the next roundabout take the first exit onto the A360
- After passing through Shrewton, turn left onto the B390 (Chitterne Road)
- Continue for around eight miles to a T-junction
- Turn left onto the A36 towards Knook
- Re-join the A303 at Deptford
Drivers are being advised to allow extra time for their journey or consider delaying travel.
