New Gambling Commission Rule Means Bigger Payouts From Casino Bonuses

A £10 casino bonus used to mean staking £500 before you saw a penny of it. Some UK sites asked for even more. Since 19 January 2026, that’s no longer legal. The Gambling Commission now caps wagering requirements on bonus funds at 10 times the bonus amount, so that same £10 offer tops out at £100 in qualifying bets.

Operators have had to redesign entire promotions around that ceiling. The old trick of advertising a huge headline bonus and burying “50x wagering” in the small print doesn’t really work any more, because the maths simply won’t allow it.

This isn’t happening in isolation. Britain banned the use of credit cards for gambling back in April 2020, closing off one of the easiest ways people had been betting with money they didn’t have. It was one of the more aggressive moves any national regulator had made on gambling payments, and it forced operators to rethink how customers fund their accounts almost overnight.

That ban pushed a lot of players toward debit-linked digital wallets instead. Did it actually help? An independent evaluation of the credit card ban found it added real friction to gambling on borrowed money, which is one reason regulators keep pointing back to it when justifying the next round of reform. The wagering cap is the latest step in the same direction, not a one-off.

So bonus terms are fairer now. But a fair bonus is only worth anything if the payment method behind it doesn’t slow you down or feel risky. Bookies.com tracks this closely, and its guide to the best Apple Pay casino sites lists which UK-facing operators actually support the payment method well, rather than just accepting it in name.

Why Apple Pay specifically? Mostly because it’s faster and harder to get wrong. You authenticate with Face ID or a passcode instead of typing out a 16-digit card number on a phone screen, which is exactly the kind of fiddly step that makes people abandon a deposit halfway through. Your actual card details never touch the casino’s own systems either. That matters more now than it used to, given how much more detail operators are collecting for affordability checks.

Withdrawals are where it gets less tidy. Apple Pay is genuinely good for getting money into an account fast, but most UK casinos still send winnings back to the original debit card rather than through the wallet, because that’s how the underlying payment rails work. If you care about speed on both ends, check a site’s specific withdrawal times. Don’t assume the deposit experience tells you anything about the payout.

And the wagering cap itself has a catch worth knowing about. Game weighting still applies. A 10x wagering requirement sounds fixed, but if a casino only counts roulette bets at, say, 20% toward clearing it, you’re effectively playing through five times what the headline number suggests. Slots almost always contribute more cleanly than table games. Read the actual terms before picking which game to grind through a bonus on, because the 10x figure on its own doesn’t tell you the real story.

None of this matters much if you can’t tell a genuine payment page from a cloned one in the first place. Fraudsters have got noticeably better at copying checkout screens and spoofing familiar logos, so it’s worth running through the basic checks for spotting a fake site, a secure URL, working contact details, reviews that don’t all read like they were written by the same person, before handing over card or wallet details anywhere online, casino or otherwise.

Either way, a bonus claimed today gets you closer to its advertised value than one claimed a year ago. That’s not a small thing in an industry that spent years overpromising at the point of withdrawal. Worth knowing what’s actually changed, from the cap itself to the payment method you use to fund it, before assuming any offer works the way it used to.
