The motorcyclist who died in a crash with a car on the A419 last night has been named locally.

Stephen Speakman, a former Honda employee based at Swindon factory, was riding his much-loved Yamaha R1 when he is believed to have hit the back of a car at speed.

Despite police officers swiftly arriving at the incident and performing CPR for 40 minutes alongside medics, Stephen did not regain consciousnesses and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Honda announced the news to staff, many of whom are friends, at the plant earlier today, while his family continue to be supported by a specially trained family liaison officer.

The road was closed for several hours for collision investigation work and reopened at 10.30pm.
