Marlborough High Street has been shut as 999 crews respond to an incident.
Police have cordoned off the area as firefighters investigate reports of a gas leak this morning (Thursday).
Emergency services first arrived on scene at around 10am, with gas engineers tasked and set to arrive soon to carry out further investigations.
Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said the incident was near Marlborough College and is urging people to avoid the area for the time being.
A witness said the closures is in place between Boots and the college, with the rest of the High Street operating as usual.
A Wiltshire Police spokesperson said: “There is currently heavy traffic throughout Marlborough which is being caused by traffic lights on SALISBURY ROAD & a fire incident on the HIGH STREET.
“The traffic is being managed by fire at this time.
“Please seek alternative routes if possible. Thank you for your patience.”
