A man with a weapon has been arrested following a serious incident in Swindon.

Wiltshire Police were called to East Wichel Way at around 2pm this afternoon, where a man was witnessed shouting abuse in the street and damaging vehicles.

When officers arrived, china bowls and other items were throw at them. As they went towards the armed suspect, he fled towards the bus gate in the direction of Foxham Way.

He then ran at police forcing them to reverse backwards away from him. As a result, two police vehicles and a member of the public’s car were damaged.

The man ran into a nearby field where he was arrested.

At last seven police units were called to the scene, but it is not yet clear what the weapon was.

A spokesperson for Wiltshire Police said: “We were called to East Wichel at approximately 1.45pm today to reports that a male was acting in an aggressive manner towards members of the public.

”Officers attended the scene and the man is reported to have punched a number of vehicles, including police cars.

”A 29-year-old local man was arrested on suspicion of criminal damage and public order offences. He has been taken to Gablecross custody for questioning.”
