A man’s been assaulted after checking on the welfare of a crying woman in Swindon.

Emergency services responded to reports of the incident in the Clive Parade area of Cricklade Road at around 6am on Sunday morning, 26 August.

The victim, a 47-year-old local man, was walking near to the roundabout by Headlands Grove when he saw a woman who appeared to be crying.

He went to check on her welfare and as they walked together down an alleyway to the rear of Clive Parade the victim was approached by a man and assaulted. It is believed that the victim lost consciousness and whilst he was on the ground his wallet was stolen.

A small group young men entered the alley a short time after the robbery and helped the victim, who sustained injuries to his head which required treatment but fortunately were not serious.

The woman was described as white, aged in her early twenties and had long dark hair. The man is described as white, of slim build with light coloured hair.

A crime scene was in place in the car park on Clive Parade until around 9.30am.

A police spokesperson said: “We would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the robbery or has any information. In particular we would like to speak to the young men who found the victim shortly after the incident as they may be able to assist with our investigation.

“If you have information please contact Swindon CID on 101 quoting reference 80527. Alternatively call Crimestoppers 0800 555 111 where details may be left anonymously if preferred.”
