A 19-year-old man has been remanded in custody after armed police officers were tasked with apprehending him in Swindon.

Firearms officers, equipped with rifles, were seen to attend Joshua Oxford’s home in Tadpole Garden Village on several occasions over the past two weeks, including Wednesday 15 September.

The day after local residents were greeted with armed officers in the street, Wiltshire Police confirmed they were hunting a wanted male.

“Officers attended an address in Tadpole Garden Village as part of enquiries to locate and arrest an outstanding suspect”, a spokesperson said.

Their efforts were unsuccessful until yesterday (29 September), when Oxford found himself in custody at Gablecross police station.

Having been remanded overnight, he was put before Swindon Magistrates’ Court this morning (30 September) accused of chasing a male down the street armed with a “large knife” at 2pm on 13 September.

Oxford admitted breaking his bail conditions, which included that he must live and sleep at his mother’s address in Heygate, Tadpole Garden Village.

Emma Hillier, defending, said she did not want to make a bail application.

Magistrates deemed the charges too serious to be dealt with under their jurisdiction, adjourning the case to Swindon Crown Court.

He was remanded into custody until mid-October.
