A man was killed in a crash in the Wiltshire countryside after a driver ‘lost control on black ice’.

Emergency services rushed reports of a collision on the B4039 between Yatton Keynell and Castle Combe, near Chippenham, shortly before 7.30pm on Monday evening (16 January).

The head-on smash involved a white Audi and a silver Honda CR-V.

The driver of the Audi – a 34-year-old man from the local area – sustained significant injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. His next of kin have been informed.

The driver of the Honda was rushed to Southmead Hospital in Bristol with injuries. They are not believed to be serious.

It’s understood the driver of the Honda lost control of their vehicle on a sheet of black ice on the hill at Kents Bottom, subsequently ploughing into the oncoming car.

Shortly after the initial incident, two further vehicles lost control on the ice – leaving the road next to the fatal crash scene. One driver was taken to hospital as a precaution.

The road has been closed for more than 12 hours so that first responders could attend, a forensic collision investigation could be undertaken and the vehicles recovered. It remained closed at 10am today (Tuesday).

Wiltshire Police is asking witnesses, or anyone with dashcam footage, to contact the serious collision investigation team at the force HQ in Devizes on 01225 694597 quoting log number 54230005395. Alternatively, they can contact the team directly – [email protected].
