A man ‘helping’ negotiators at an armed siege in Trowbridge was restrained and arrested.

Emergency services were working to resolve an incident in Glebe Road yesterday evening (Thursday 25 August), where a man had made threats of arson and violence.

A local resident, who knew the suspect personally, offered to assist the police. He offered to talk to the man and hopefully encourage him to come out of his home peacefully.

Specially-trained negotiators allowed the man into the inner cordon and liaised with him about the best way to engage with the suspect.

However, a short time later, he was asked to leave the cordon – but instead, he allegedly became aggressive towards officers and attempted to obstruct their operation.

It took five officers to restrain the 29-year-old man on the ground before he could be arrested on suspision of obstructing police.

After a struggle on the ground and the application of leg restraints, the man was carried into the back of a police van and taken to Melksham custody.

Following a search of his person, he was further arrested on suspicion of being in the possession of class A drugs.
