A man in his 20s has died in an incident at a bridge on the A419 in Swindon.
Emergency services were called to the major route, beneath the Merlin Way road bridge, at around 2.30am this morning (Wednesday 16 November).
The man, who lived in the local area, was struck by a vehicle on the A-road between White Hart Roundabout and Commonhead Roundabout.
Wiltshire Police has since launched a forensic collision investigation to establish whether he fell from the bridge or was walking on the carriageway at the time of the collision.
Posting publicly on social media, a family member said they believed he took his own life. This is not something that can be confirmed until the inquest concludes.
“Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time”, a spokesperson for Wiltshire Police said.
They added: “Drivers are advised that closures will be in place on both carriageways of the A419 at Dorcan Way and at the White Hart roundabout near the Honda factory until late this evening.
“This is likely to cause significant delays, especially during rush hour – please allow extra time and seek alternative routes.
“Our enquiries are ongoing to ascertain the facts surrounding this incident.
“We are asking that anyone who may have driven along the A419 in the early hours to check their vehicle and contact us if you see any damage or have any other concerns.
“We would also like to hear from anyone who may have recorded dashcam footage at the time and location of the incident.
“If you can help, please call the Serious Collision Investigation Team on 01225 694597 and quote log number 19 of November 16. Alternatively, email [email protected].”
