A man was detained in a pub following a police helicopter search yesterday evening.

Wiltshire Police received a call regarding a concern for the welfare of a man in the afternoon, sparking a large search operation in the Trowbridge and Melksham area.

The National Police Air Service helicopter was brought in to support the police officers on the ground – but was stood down less than 20 minutes later.

At around 6pm, the man was located in The Bear, a JD Wetherspoon pub, in Bath Road, Melksham, following an hour-long search.

At least eight police officers attended the establishment before the man was detained, restrained on the floor and looked after until an ambulance arrived at around 7.30pm.

He was taken to a place of safety where he will receive treatment and support.

“Our officers located a person who had been reported missing by those concerned for his welfare at The Bear pub in Melksham shortly before 6.30pm yesterday”, a spokesperson for Wiltshire Police confirmed.
