A suspect has been charged after a man was seriously injured in a Wiltshire village shop.

A 65-year-old man sustained a broken spine after he was repeatedly hit by an attacker using a motorcycle helmet as a weapon on Friday afternoon (27 October).

Following the incident, which happened in The Village Store in High Street, Upavon, the victim went to Salisbury District Hospital in pain and urinating blood.

During a CT scan, doctors uncovered two fractured vertebrae in his spine. He is currently incapacitated as a result and has been referred to a spinal unit for treatment.

Police arrested 63-year-old William Bruce in connection with the assault. He has since been charged with inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent and was remanded in police custody.

The defendant, of Watson Close, Upavon, appeared at Salisbury Magistrates’ Court today (Tuesday) and spoke only to confirm this name, date of birth and address.

The motorcycle mechanic and father-of-five was remanded in custody ahead of a plea and trial preparation hearing at Salisbury Crown Court on 29 November.
