A man has died during police pursuit just three miles from the Wiltshire border.
Officers were chasing a silver Ford Transit Connect on the A343 in Stockbridge at around 11pm on Sunday (30 January).
During the pursuit, the vehicle left the carriageway and came to rest in a field on Red Rice Road.
Hampshire Police confirmed the van was not involved in a collision with any other vehicles, including police vehicles.
The case has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct, the police watchdog.
In a statement, the force said: “At around 11pm on Sunday, 30 January police were in pursuit of a silver Ford Transit Connect on the A343. After a short time, the vehicle left the carriageway and came to rest in a field on Red Rice Road.
“The van was not in collision with another vehicle.
“Colleagues from the ambulance service attended. However, the driver of the vehicle, a 40-year-old man from Hythe, was pronounced dead before he reached the hospital.
“His family have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.
“Officers had been in the area responding to reports of a burglary in Monxton.
“A mandatory referral has been made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.”
