A major blaze has broken out at a landfill site in Wiltshire this evening (Sunday).
Firefighters raced to battle the flames at Hills Waste Solutions in Compton Bassett, near Calne, following a call from a member of the public at around 6pm.
At least six fire engines and three fire officers are in attendance alongside a pumping appliance. Further resources are understood to be en route.
Drone footage taken by Wiltshire 999s shortly after the incident was called into the emergency services show a significant black smoke plume.
A large amount of waste on the landfill site is ablaze – and is likely to take many days to extinguish.
Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service is warning locals to shut their windows and doors.
A spokesperson said: “We are currently in attendance at a recycling centre fire in Calne.
“There is a significant smoke plume in the area so local residents are advised to keep doors and windows closed.”
Back in April 2022, a fire broke out at the same site – and involved 40,000 tonnes of waste. It took days to put out – and involved dozens of firefighters from across the county.
