Armed police have arrested a drunk thief who stole a funeral car in Swindon.
Officers responded to reports of a cortege vehicle having been taken from outside Hillier Funeral Service in The Broadway, Moredon, at around 1.30pm on Wednesday (9 May).
The black Volvo V90 was located approximately 30 minutes later by firearms cops, who spotted the driver using his phone behind the wheel.
Following a short attempt to escape officers, the car came to a stop and the driver – a man aged in his 50s – was arrested.
He’s currently being held in custody on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle, driving whilst disqualified, driving without insurance and drink driving.
The criminal is understood to have been recalled to prison as a result of his offending.
In a statement shortly after the incident, Wiltshire Police said: “At around 1.30pm today, we received a report of the theft of a Volvo Estate from a business in The Broadway, Whitworth Road.
“Following swift proactive enquiries, the vehicle was located around half an hour later and the suspect, a man in his 50s was arrested on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle.
“He was further arrested on suspicion of driving without insurance and while disqualified, and further arrested again after failing a breath test. He has been taken to custody for questioning.”
