A former school building in Swindon has been completely destroyed by fire.

Emergency services were called to the scene in St Phillips Road, Stratton St Margaret, at around 4pm today (19 March) following reports of smoke billowing from the premises.

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service (DWFRS) sent at least five fire engines to the incident, including an aerial platform appliance.

The derelict building, previously known as the Stratton Education Centre, was due to be redeveloped into housing, according to local residents.

Fire crews remain on scene this evening (7pm), as they continue to fight the flames.

An ambulance, two ambulance rapid response vehicles and four fire engines were in attendance earlier this afternoon. However, no one’s believed to have been hurt.

Locals have been told to stay indoors, and shut their windows and doors.

A DWFRS spokesperson said: “We are currently dealing with a large fire on St Philips Road, Stratton St Margaret.

“A large number of fire appliances are in attendance and there is a lot of smoke issuing.

“Please avoid this area due to traffic congestion, and if you live locally keep all doors and windows closed.”

Wiltshire Police has closed nearby roads whilst emergency services work at the scene.

A spokesperson for the force said: “We are currently assisting with multiple road closures following a report of a fire at the Stratton Education Centre.

“Our colleagues from Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service are on scene dealing with the incident. Our officers are also on scene.

“Currently, closures are in place for traffic in St Philips Road, Orchard Road, Clays Close and Greenland Road. Access is for residents only at this time.”
