Five key roads in Swindon are set to be resurfaced before the end of February as part of ongoing work to improve the town’s highway network.

Swindon Borough Council confirmed sections of Aldbourne Road, County Road, Aylesbury Street, Bridge End Road and Westcott Place will all undergo resurfacing.

The work is scheduled to take place between 19 January and 20 February, weather permitting.

The routes have been identified as high-traffic roads that require repairs, with the scheme aimed at improving surface conditions for motorists across the town.

The resurfacing forms part of the council’s annual programme of major and minor road works, with more than £3.75 million being invested in repairing deteriorating road surfaces.

Aldbourne Road

The roads were prioritised in line with the Local Transport Plan agreed by Cabinet in March 2025.

An additional £1.5 million in funding from central government has allowed the council to bring forward extra schemes within the programme.

Overall, the council has almost £6 million allocated for road maintenance during the 2025/26 financial year.

This includes £170,000 for reactive pothole repairs, alongside funding for patching works, refreshed road markings and street furniture maintenance.

The investment comes against an estimated £50 million backlog of road repairs across the borough.

Councillor Chris Watts, Cabinet Member for the Environment and Transport, said: “We’re building on the good work of 2025 by starting the year with work to resurface several important roads across Swindon.

“Anyone who’s recently used Aylesbury Street to get onto Station Road knows exactly why we’re doing this work and it’s a similar situation for the other locations on our list.

“We also know that these aren’t the only roads that need work but, due to our limited budget and resource, we need to carefully consider where we will carry out resurfacing work.

“This is just the start of our work in 2026 and we will continue to tackle our £50m backlog and start to see improvements in the condition of Swindon’s roads.”

The council has also confirmed it will receive £30 million from central government over the next four financial years, starting from 26/27, to support road maintenance.

This funding will be used to develop a four-year Local Transport Plan setting out where repairs are most needed and when they can be delivered.

The planned road closures are as follows:

• Aldbourne Road from Monday 19 January to Tuesday 20 January between 8am and 6pm, and Wednesday 21 January to Thursday 22 January between 8pm and 6am;

• County Road from Wednesday 21 January to Tuesday 27 January between 8am and 5pm, with relining works between 8pm and midnight;

• Aylesbury Street from Tuesday 27 January to Friday 30 January between 8am and 5pm;

• Bridge End Road from Monday 9 February to Friday 13 February between 8pm and 6am;

• Westcott Place from Monday 16 February to Friday 20 February between 8am and 6pm.
