A fisherman pulled an unresponsive man from the River Avon and started CPR.

The incident unfolded in the Lord’s Walk area of Amesbury, off the A345 Countess Road, at around 11.30am yesterday morning (Tuesday, 19 September).

Emergency services rushed to the scene – including Wiltshire Air Ambulance, which landed metres from the ongoing effort to save the man’s life.

The fisherman had already pulled the man from the water and started CPR ahead of 999 crews arrival.

The man, aged in his 30s, was taken to hospital in a “serious condition”, Wiltshire Police in a statement provided to Wiltshire 999s shortly after the incident.

The man remains at Salisbury District Hospital on life support. It is not known at this stage how he came to be in the river.

Locals reported seeing a large number of 999 vehicles at the scene – including three ambulances, an ambulance response car and several police vehicles.
