Firefighters were called to Coate Water Country Park after visitors lit a campfire and used a disposable barbecue.
A crew from Swindon Fire Station responded to reports of a fire at the popular beauty spot on Sunday night (9 August).
On arrival, firefighters discovered visitors with a small campfire and a disposable barbecue. Both were extinguished by the crew.
Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said it does not encourage people to use disposable barbecues because of the risk of wildfires.
A spokesperson said: “As a service, we do not encourage the use of disposable BBQs as they have been the cause of many wildfires over recent years which consume our environment and our resources.”
Swindon Borough Council’s ranger team confirmed that visitors are allowed to bring their own barbecues to Coate Water, subject to restrictions.
In a statement, the team said: “Coate Water Country Park is the only country park where visitors are allowed to bring their own BBQ.
“Our rules state groups must be less than 20 people, groups over 20 people must hire one of our static BBQs and disposable BBQs/fires are prohibited.
“Please enjoy our public spaces responsibly.”
