Extra powers were given to police officers to prevent a disorder in Devizes.
Wiltshire Police enacted emergency powers on Bonfire Night, amid concerns about potential unrest in the town centre.
A Section 60 order, along with a Section 60AA order, was in place from 7.55pm on Wednesday 5 November – granting officers enhanced stop and search capabilities.
The powers allowed police to stop and search individuals in a designated area without needing reasonable grounds.
Officers were also able to instruct people to remove face coverings that might conceal their identity. The orders have now expired.
Chief Inspector Ben Huggins said residents may have noticed more officers in the area during the evening.
He added: “This was part of our efforts to provide reassurance and respond swiftly to any signs of disorder.
“We do not believe there to be a risk to the wider public but we want the public to know that we are taking firm but proportionate action to support our front line officers, ensure public safety, and proactively prevent any escalation.”
The force has not confirmed whether any arrests or incidents occurred during the period the orders were in place.
