The driver of a car involved in a head-on crash in Chippenham remains in hospital.

Emergency services were called to a collision in Hungerdown Lane, involving a red Volkswagen Up and a black Ford Fiesta, at around 11am on Wednesday (18 May).

The male driver of the Volkswagen, aged in his 70s, appeared to have suffered minor injuries, but he took a turn for the worse at around 11.30am – unexpectedly falling into cardiac arrest.

Wiltshire Air Ambulance was then called to the incident and the man was airlifted to the county’s closest regional major trauma centre at Southmead Hospital in Bristol.

Two days on, he remains in hospital in a serious condition having sustained what Wiltshire Police described as “potentially life-threatening injuries”.

The driver of the Ford, a woman, suffered minor injuries in the collision and did not require any hospital treatment.

A forensic collision investigation was undertaken at the scene – closing the road between Ladyfield Road and Derriads Lane for around ten hours.
