A man caught driving home from a night out with friends has appeared in court.
Shaun Jones, 37, pleaded guilty to driving a motor vehicle whilst over the prescribed alcohol limit at Swindon Magistrates’ Court today (1 March).
The defendant, of Foreman Street, Calne, was caught by police after leaving the Old Lane pub in Lodge Road, Chippenham, in a Hyundai.
Keith Ballinger, prosecuting, said he told officers that he “felt merry” but didn’t believe he was over the limit when he attempted to drive home.
In custody, he provided an evidential breath sample of 98 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath – the legal limit is 35 microgrammes.
Representing himself, Jones told the court “I apologise, I have disappointed myself”.
Adding: “I’m sorry, I was stupid”.
The construction worker said his new employment had come to an end and he is struggling to find a new role within walking distance, or that fits his skill set.
He said he had previously been medicated for depression but claims the tablets made him feel worse and he stopped taking them. Jones said he wants to seek support for his drinking.
The dad-of-two is currently claiming benefits and his children do not live with him.
Magistrates adjourned the case for a pre-sentence report. Jones was remanded on unconditional bail.
