Dozens of riot police have been patrolling Swindon town centre this afternoon.
The serious police presence comes ahead of Swindon Town Football Club’s match against Newport County, which kicks of at the County Ground at 3pm.
Wiltshire Police is asking the thousands of supporters attending the match between to support the police and both clubs in making public safety a priority before, during and after the game.
Match Commander Superintendent Sue Austin said: “Three points for Swindon Town isn’t the only priority on Saturday. We want to make sure that everyone gets home safe.
“We are working closely with our partner agencies, including Swindon Town and Newport County, to make this a safe and enjoyable experience for all whilst reducing the impact of this event to the local community.
“The public may notice an increased police presence before, during and after the match. This is to maintain public safety whilst minimising community disruption”.
Some roads are likely to be closed before and after the match as crowds take to the streets.
