Dozens of firefighters have tackled a serious house fire during the early hours of this morning.

Fire crews from Trowbridge, Westbury, Melksham, Warminster, Devizes and Bath responded to the emergency call reporting a home ablaze at around 1am today, in Frome Road, Trowbridge.

At the height of the blaze, massive plumes of black smoke could be seen for miles around.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus rescued one casualty from a first floor bedroom.

The casualty was initially taken to the Royal United Hospital in Bath but have since been transferred to a specialist burns unit at Morriston Hospital, Swansea, where they are said to be critical but stable.

Wiltshire Police have confirmed they are investigating the cause of the fire: “We are currently investigating the cause as to whether or not it is suspicious along with Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service.”
