A Devizes man who abused an 11-year-old has been jailed for more than a decade.
65-year-old Lloyd Burgess pleaded guilty to two counts of indecent assault on a girl, which took place between October 1995 and October 1998.
The defendant, of Sheep Street, admitted the offences back in March – and appeared at Winchester Crown Court for sentencing on 1 May.
Wiltshire Police launched an investigation into Burgess in 2021, when the abuse was reported. He was arrested and detectives worked to gather evidence.
He was jailed for 11 years, and will be subject to an an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order. He’ll also be registered as a sex offender for life.
“I’d like to take this opportunity to praise the victim in this case for her bravery in reporting her ordeal to police all these years later”, Detective Constable Nicky Cross said.
Adding: “In doing so, she has enabled us to conduct an investigation into Burgess’ offending and ensure he was put before the courts.
“This case should serve as an example to anyone who may have experienced this kind of ordeal that it is crucial you report this to police, regardless of how much time has since passed.
“We will always take reports of this nature seriously and will leave no stone unturned in investigating offenders like Burgess.”
