A Swindon couple’s row in the street woke up a local resident – who then called 999.

At Swindon Magistrates’ Court yesterday (28 June), Mateusz Winiarski, 26, and Patrycia Merwa, 25, pleaded guilty to using threatening or abusive words or behaviour.

Keith Ballinger, prosecuting, said police responded to a 999 call reporting a male and female fighting in Tismead Crescent, Old Town, in the early hours of 20 March.

The caller said she had been woken by the sound of a disorder outside. She told the control room that the couple were pulling and pushing each other.

Officers arrived on scene, separating the pair and talking to them about what had happened – but they both denied assaulting each other during the incident.

They were arrested and in a custody interview, Winiarski told officers the pair had consumed a bottle of vodka prior to events and he was trying to stop Merwa from walking off without shoes on.

Addressing magistrates in court, Merwa said: “I’m very sorry, it’s embarrassing really.

“I didn’t want this situation to take place at all. I can’t remember anything, so there’s not much I can say.”

Both defendants, of Wootton Bassett Road, Swindon, were handed a six-month conditional discharge.

This means the defendants are convicted of the crime, but won’t be punished for it – unless they commit another crime within the discharge timeframe of six months.
