A child was found in the road outside a nursery – after managing to escape unnoticed.
The concerning incident happened at Little Willows Nursery in Corsham on Monday 16 June, when a youngster reportedly breached the perimeter while playing in the outdoor play area.
In a letter, provision manager Jane Barber confirmed the child was unharmed and “happily” continued their day as usual following communication with their parent.
Wiltshire 999s understands that the child was of toddler age and was out of the nursery — unsupervised — for around eight minutes.
Following the incident, the nursery – in Stokes Road – has introduced several immediate changes to improve site security and child safety.
“The carpark will no longer be accessible to parents/carers between the hours of 9am-5pm, the gate leading into the carpark will be shut and locked during these times”, Ms Barber wrote.
She continued: “A review of our garden risk assessment has been carried out and shared with staff.
“Our safeguarding policies and procedures have been renewed and have been sent out alongside this letter.
“I have notified the local authority, and I will continue to liaise with them as to any investigatory procedures that need to be taken. Ofsted have been notified of the incident.”
Ms Barber told parents that safeguarding of children at the setting “continues to remain of paramount importance”.
Adding: “I sincerely apologise about the incident that occurred and want to reassure you that my team and I will thrive to continue to keep children safe and care for them to a high standard.”
