A casualty has been airlifted to hospital with serious injuries following a crash on the A4.
Emergency services were called to a three-vehicle road traffic collision on the busy route in the Clatford area, west of Marlborough, at around 3pm today (Wednesday).
The incident involved two cars and a flatbed van, which is used for traffic management work. The van left the carriageway, scattering cones on the road.
One of the cars was a BMW i4, and was missing a wheel. 999 crews worked to free one casualty from the other car – of which the make and model is unknown at this stage.
Firefighters used cutting kit to remove parts of the vehicle, before the injured person was freed and given urgent treatment on scene.
They were then airlifted to the Major Trauma Centre at Southmead Hospital in Bristol by Wiltshire and Bath Air Ambulance.
Police have closed the A4 in both directions outside Clatford Farm as they await updates from doctors on the condition of the casualty.
If they are deemed to have life-changing or life-threatening injuries, a full-scale forensic collision investigation will likely take place overnight. Less serious injuries could see the road reopened in the coming hours.
A spokesperson for Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “”We were called at 3:12pm today with reports of a road traffic collision on the A4 Bath Road, Clatford.
“Two fire appliances were mobilised, from Marlborough and Pewsey and on arrival found two cars and one flatbed lorry involved.
“Firefighters used hydraulic cutting equipment to release one person trapped in one of the cars and has been left in the care of the ambulance service.
“The stop came in at 4:49pm and the road is still closed in both directions.”
In a short statement, providing little detail, a spokesperson for Wiltshire Police said: “Please be aware that the A4 at Fyfield, west of Marlborough, is currently blocked in both directions due to a serious collision. Please find alternate routes.”
