A ‘broke and unemployed’ boxer from Swindon has appeared in court after failing to pay a fine.

Jamie Cox, whose real name is James Russan, appeared before Swindon Magistrates’ Court today (21 March).

The 34-year-old, of Buckthorn Drive, Woodhall Park, has failed to pay £1,495 owed in fines for four driving-related offences he was sentenced for in June 2021.

The offences include: driving without insurance, using a motor vehicle without a valid MOT certificate, using a motor vehicle with a tyre that had insufficient tread and failing to comply with white lines on a motorway.

Cox had paid £500 off but he stopped making regular payments. As a result, he was summonsed to court.

He told the court that he is currently unemployed and is having to sell his second home – which has been on the market with Charles Harding Estate Agents for eight weeks.

Reassessing the level of fines, which were imposed in his absence last year, chief magistrate Martin Clarke wrote off a substantial amount.

“That’s a heck of a discount you’ve got there”, he told champion boxer Cox – who now has to pay about £300, rather than £1,495.

He added: “If you sell the house, clear it off in one go. You’ve got a substantial discount today.”
