A suspected drink driver has been arrested after a near-miss with the stones at Avebury this morning (Sunday, 22 August).
The man’s Alfa Romeo crashed through the National Trust fence before narrowly avoiding a collision with the prehistoric monument.
A spokesperson for Wiltshire Police said: “Shortly after 8am this morning (22/08) we responded to a single-vehicle road traffic collision in Avebury.
“The incident involved a black Alfa Romeo that left the road and ended in the field next to one of the stones.
“Only minor injuries to the driver, who was taken to hospital as a precaution, were reported as the sole occupant of the vehicle, with damage to the fence, but not the stone.
“A man in his 40s was arrested on suspicion of drink driving. He has since been released under investigation.”
