A ‘stabbing’ in a Wiltshire village sparked a large police and forensics presence today (Sunday).

Police, including armed officers, attended an address in Newleaze Park, Broughton Gifford, near Melksham, in the early hours following a reported assault.

A woman, aged in her 60s, was reportedly rushed to Southmead Hospital in Bristol, the nearest regional major trauma centre, on blue lights and under a police escort.

Whilst it has not yet been confirmed by police, it’s believed the victim sustained knife wounds in the violent attack. Her injuries are not believed to be life-changing or life-threatening.

Forensic work has been ongoing at the house; crime scene investigators remained at the scene to gather vital evidence until late afternoon.

Two detectives also attended the property and carried out door-to-door enquiries.

Wiltshire Police confirmed that a man, aged in his 60s, was arrested on suspicion of inflicting grievous bodily harm and remains in custody for questioning.

A force spokesperson labelled the attack a “domestic incident” – indicating that the pair were known to each other. They added: “Enquiries are ongoing at the scene.”
