Armed police to be deployed at Summer Solstice in wake of terror attacks

Following terrorist-related incidents across the country, English Heritage say they are working with Wiltshire Police to ensure visitors’ safety at Stonehenge next week.

Summer Solstice 2017 takes place on Wednesday 21 June, and though police don’t fear an attack at the ancient prehistoric landmark, armed police will be patrolling in the wake of the terror attacks in London and Manchester.

Further to armed police, only small bags – sized approximately 30cm x 25cm x 15cm – will be allowed into the Monument Field and searches will be conducted.

A spokesperson for English Heritage said: “Following recent terrorist related incidents across the UK, additional security measures will be in place at Summer Solstice this year.

“We are working closely with Wiltshire Police to ensure the safety of all visitors and, as a result, only small bags (approx 30cm x 25cm x 15cm) will be allowed into the Monument Field and searches will be conducted.

“We strongly advise you to only bring essential items and thank you in advance for your patience.”
