The busy A420 in Swindon is closed in both directions between Old Vicarage Lane and White Hart Roundabout this morning due to a major gas leak.
A exclusion zone has been set up – it’s not currently known whether any homes have been evacuated. The area is closed to both motorists and pedestrians.
The source of the gas leak is understood to be a broken pipe opposite Gablecross Police Station – where roadworks have been underway for many weeks.
A spokesperson for Wiltshire Police said: “We are currently receiving a large number of calls regarding this – please note that we appreciate your calls but we are aware and officers, along with the fire service, are currently on scene.
”We are awaiting for specialists to attend to deal with the gas leak and the road closure is expected to be in place for the next couple of hours.
”We appreciate this is likely to cause long delays in the area so please seek an alternative route where possible.
“Officers who normally work from Gablecross Police Station are working from other policing points around the town during this time.”
