A car crashed and burst into flames on the A4 near Derry Hill on Friday (21 June).
Emergency services rushed to reports of a road traffic collision on the A4 London Road, near the junction for Old Derry Hill, shortly before midnight on Friday (21 June).
The initial scene resembled what 999 crews were faced with on 16 August 2020 – when a car collided with a house, killing four young men from Calne.
Tragically, Ryan Nelson, Corey Owen, Matthew Parke and Jordan Rawlings were trapped inside the vehicle, which overturned and caught fire. Frantic efforts to rescue them failed.
On Friday, a Mercedes and a Ford Focus were involved in a crash – with the Mercedes bursting into flames just metres from a memorial to the four local lads.
Thankfully, the occupants were able to exit the vehicle.
The fire caused damaged to bushes at the roadside and scorched the window frame of a nearby home. A metal barrier prevented the car from striking the property.
The drivers of both cars were taken to hospital as a precaution and for observation. They aren’t believed to have sustained any serious injuries.
Police recovered the vehicles and cleared the road before it reopened several hours later.
On Saturday morning (22 June), the road surface was visible damaged.
Wiltshire Police confirmed that an investigation into what happened is ongoing.
