A scooter rider has been killed in a head-on crash with a car near Swindon.

Emergency services raced to reports of a two-vehicle road traffic collision on the B4553, near Purton, at around 11am this morning (Tuesday).

The incident involved a black Honda 125cc scooter and a blue Ford Focus approximately 500 metres south of Packhorse Lane.

Many 999 resources were deployed, including Wiltshire and Bath Air Ambulance.

The male rider of the scooter, aged in his 70s, sustained significant injuries. Despite the best efforts of medics, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Wiltshire Police confirmed that the man’s next of kin has been informed.

The female driver of the Ford was taken to Great Western Hospital as a precaution. She was uninjured, but left shaken as a result of the crash.

A full-scale forensic collision is underway at the scene, with the road expected to remain closed until early tomorrow morning (Wednesday, 3 September).

Witnesses, or anyone with relevant dashcam footage, are asked to contact the Serious Collision Investigation Team on 01225 694597 quoting log 107 of 2 September. Alternatively, email at [email protected].

A spokesperson for South Western Ambulance Service said: “We were called at 11:17hrs on Tuesday 02 September to a road traffic collision near Swindon.

“We sent one double-crewed land ambulance, an air ambulance, an operations officer, and a rapid response vehicle to the scene.

“We conveyed one patient by land ambulance to Great Western Hospital.”

In an earlier statement in relation to the road closure, a spokesperson for Wiltshire Police said:

“Please be aware of road closures in place on the B4553 to the west of Swindon, at the junction of Collins Lane on the B4553 and Packhorse Lane, following a road traffic collision.

“Closures are expected to be in place for some time.

“Drivers should seek alternative routes and expect delays in the area.”
