A man has been airlifted to hospital after reportedly jumping from a third-floor flat in a bid to flee police who had been called to a domestic incident.

Officers were called to reports of an assault at a property in Gainsborough Close in Bemerton Heath, Salisbury, at 7.16am this morning (29 June).

As they attempted to gain entry to the flat, a man within the premises “is then suspected to have fallen from a window”, Wiltshire Police said.

Wiltshire and Bath Air Ambulance landed near the incident, as the charity’s critical care medics raced to assist officers and ambulance crews with the injured man.

He was conveyed to the helicopter by ambulance, before being airlifted to the Major Trauma Centre at Southampton General Hospital for urgent treatment.

The block of flats were cordoned off as a crime scene while investigation work was carried out.

The force confirmed that the alleged assault victim was “safe and well”, and the injured man was “conscious and breathing” following his fall.

The incident comes just hours after armed police descended on the same road – near the SPAR shop – over reports of a man firing an air rifle.

Wiltshire Police statements

The force’s inital statement said: “We responded to an assault in Gainsborough Close, Salisbury, at 7.16am this morning (29/06).

“A male was airlifted to hospital after sustaining a suspected fall injury.”

When Wiltshire 999s request further information about what happened, a spokesperson added: “We attended a concern for welfare inside a property in Gainsborough close.

“Police were able to confirm that the occupant of the address was safe and well.

“A male that had been present in the address is then suspected to have fallen from a window of the property before officers were able to gain entry.

“Ambulance were on scene and the male is being treated for his injuries but was conscious and breathing.”
