A suspected XL Bully that killed a woman in Bristol has since been put to sleep.

Avon and Somerset Police initially said that the dog was “sedated and seized”, but it has since been euthanised following the fatal attack on Wednesday (26 February).

A 19-year-old woman sustained significant injuries in the incident in Cobhorn Drive, Hartcliffe, and died as a result.

The process to fully determine the breed was described as a ‘complex one’ – although it was suspected to be an XL Bully, a spokesperson said.

In an updated statement, the force said: “Our enquiries are at an early stage; we have two people in custody to question to help us understand what happened prior to our attendance and ask people not to speculate about the circumstances while our investigation is ongoing.

“It was sedated and taken away and it has been put down on the grounds of public safety. It was not done at the scene.

“We are still to determine the type of breed as it is a complex assessment.”
